Iris Festival 2010 - with special surprises!

OAKHILL GARDEN 2010 SPRING FESTIVAL

Festival Update

Iris nursery is open to the public for the weekend of May 21st until May 24th 2010 due to peak bloom period occurring on this weekend. Read about last year's festival in the article in the Post Tribune
2009 Iris Festival Perfect weather and perfect timing for the iris flowers which areat their peak performance. We want to thank all the neighbors and friends that came out to visit last year and a special thanks to the new friends that we met. I always end up learning more than I teach at the festival and this year was no different. Thanks to of course to the Iris, the Queens of the Garden for putting on a spectacular show. I swear that they like to show off and the more admiring visitors the longer and brighter and more sophisticated they look. Of special notice was Eagle's Flight which I was thrilled with this season, and Canary Yellow which burned yellow as the sun setting in the Sahara. Sultan's Sire was out of this world. Black Dragon roared with dark delight. We will post pictures and videos here in about a week after we recover from the sensory delight of being in the garden enjoying the sights, and smells.

Media Breaking News about Oakhill Garden

Vidette Times Gardening Article Printed in 05/25/2006 newspaper gardening column Petal Talks by Jean Starr.
Last year news: Despite this newspaper article in the Chesterton Tribune the Iris Festival will continue as planned. The iris are reaching peak bloom. I have never seen such a display as they are putting this year, perhaps to prove to the town councillors that beauty cannot be zoned or caged. As is usual, we only take orders for plants at the Festival. People place orders which they receive at harvest time beginning in July. These are shipped via the US postal system. There will be a garage sale of potted plants, membership application forms for the American Iris Society, and the freedom to stroll the gardens and enjoy what nature has so benevonently bestowed upon us all on earth.

Light blue standards and falls. Vigorous grower. This is an aggressive grower that is virtually carefree and can hold its own against weeds. An older variety but one with lots of crowd appeal and road site viewability. Excellent for bank stabilization. We have used it on steep sandy ridges to hold the soil. Iris are useful for many things!
